KARACHI, July 31, 2019: The Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) on Wednesday unveiled its maiden and unique manual on the “Evolution of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in Pakistan: OICCI Perspective”. The ceremony was chaired by Mr Mujeeb Ahmed Khan, Chairman, Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan).
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman IPO thanked the OICCI for its support in contributing for an improved IPR regime. He informed that all matters related to IPO-Pakistan were being reviewed and relevant rules, procedures and policies would be updated as well. He acknowledged that despite continuing efforts for improvement, there are still several issues that are yet to be resolved by the IPO-Pakistan including the amendment of the Copyrights Ordinance 1962, Trademarks Ordinance, 2001 and Patents Ordinance, 2000 and capacity building at the IPO offices.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Ms. Shazia Syed emphasized on the importance of protecting IPR to attract the foreign investors and suggested that IPO-Pakistan should partner with the private sector to agree on the ground reality and to seek suggestions for better enforcement measures.
The manual will give comprehensive views of the laws and its application in relation to copyrights, trademarks and patents in the country.
